Received my actual tax bill. It went up 30% over the prior year. I hope this crazy acceleration in values comes to a halt or reverses some. It actually looks like my house value according to Zillow, Redfin, and another site actually dropped by $50K which is a-okay in my book. We're not moving anytime soon.

If that's the case, the assessment for the house went down, what caused the increase? An increase in the rate?

Never mind, I see that it was realty sites that lowered your value, not the taxing authority.

Since that's the case can you appeal the tax bill using comparables, if any?

Too late to appeal now ... we all must wait for the '24/'25 cycle and hope that real estate has a significant pullback between now and then.

The estimate (initially 60%) and what we actually got dinged in the end (30%) were adjusted down by adjusting our mill rate down.

Doesn't make it suck any less - 30% is still a huge jump.

It's not a secret that Zillow is gaming the system and trying to give the illusion that the housing market is doing okay when in fact it's about to shake out again.

The $400B lawsuit against the NAR is also a telling sign that a big shift is coming in the way houses are bought and sold. I won't shed a tear for the tens of thousands of Realturds who get washed away and have to go find something else to do.

*EDIT: $1.8B judgement against the NAR and others including Berkshire. I think the $400B was in reference to the broader market potential for similar lawsuits, or something.

I believe it has to do with the mil calculation. The assessed value of my property was like $200,000 over last assessment 2 years ago.

Pure insanity! The only recourse for this is moving some place where nobody else wants to live. At least you are safe for awhile till it gets popular years later.

When I was born in Dillon, Mt in 1948 it was a tiny backwater town far from everywhere. At least that is what I was told. But when I drove through in Oct 2023 it was crawling with people, mostly hunters, or fishermen it seemed. Too much activity for me.

All of the levy's failed here in Cascade County on our last election because of the whole property tax deal that's going on.

LOL ... Dillon. The last place in Montana to get the interstate -- we used to have to drive a mile north or south just to get to the interstate

Now look at it

What a surprise - the County giveth, the State taketh away

Glad we don't have a mortgage. I can imagine the folks who FOMO'd into the market here won't be thrilled to see their payments spike (again).
