Lots of people compile playlists for Christmas and I'm one of them, but how about the winter solstice? For me, the solstice is an even bigger day than Christmas (Christmas is just the solstice in disguise, anyhow). It's not that I'm a pagan, I just hate the dark. The solstice may be the shortest day of the year, but it also marks the return of the sun - the return of the light - and I'm all for that. This year I'm compiling a solstice playlist, and I'd love to get your suggestions. These are a few of the songs I've come up with so far:
Sunburst - (instrumental) Andrew York
Here comes the Sun - The Beatles
The Sun is gonna Shine - (Native American) Bill Miller
New Dawn Coming - Cowboy Junkies
I can See Clearly Now - Johnny Nash
Walking on Sunshine - Katrina & The Waves
As you can see, my taste in music is pretty eclectic, but I'm sure there are many more songs suitable for the solstice that I haven't even thought of yet. Can anyone help me out with more song for my special playlist? Many thanks!
Other than George Winston's December, nothing comes to mind.
That said, a lot of music reminds me of certain times of year. For example, U2's War always reminds evokes images of autumn. The Doors? Summer. I suppose I must've first come play War during the autumn months, and explore the Doors' catalog during the summer. Those associations linger in the recesses of my mind. There are many other examples.
Ooooh! Me like very much! Thank you! Back in the day, I loved Jethro Tull, but somehow I missed this one. Anything by Jethro Tull always reminds me of an old friend who suffers from schizophrenia, but he never let those voices keep him down. He was an outstanding flute player and probably the biggest fan Jethro Tull ever had. My, how I enjoyed hearing him playing Jethro Tull's music. Much gratitude for turning me on to a new (to me) Jethro Tull song and bringing back the memory of the incredibly gifted Matthew Galvin playing Tull's "Christmas Song".
Matt, may this Christmas find you in a place that's safe and warm. And may your music - especially Christmas Song - reverberate throughout everywhere in Colorado Springs from the city streets to Pikes Peak and all the other mountains which surround our home town. You were one of those special people who helped me to understand that "You are missing the point that I'm sure does not need making - The Christmas Spirit is not what you drink."
Yes! I had been wracking my brain knowing that song was out there somewhere but I just couldn't quite remember it. Thanks for jogging the memory of Ms. Brainless!

This has been great fun and it's already way late even for this night owl. If I don't make myself go to bed, I'll be up until dawn listening to music. Thanks to everyone of you for the inspiration. And happy Winter Solstice to all!
