is it possible that a cover of a song is better than the original version?
( or is it you secretly love the cover more?)
I love Ryan Adams version of Oasis' Wonderwall. It just seems like a new song altogether. Rate your favorite covers, as many as you want, why they're better or why we should check them out. If you want to inform us on songs lesser known to be covers, feel free.

Hendrix practically made
All Along the Watchtower his own.
Dylan wrote it, Hendrix gave it more urgency and power.
In this version, he forgets the lyrics and messes up a bit, but somehow still pulls it off.

Gary Jules' version of Tears for Fears'
Mad World. (For me, it's the lonely vocal, the clever video and Donnie Darko connection that collectively trumps the original.)

Jeff Buckley's cover of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah (probably anybody's cover would be better, but esp Jeff's.)

It is absolutely possible. I had no idea that All Along The Watchtower was Dylan's song and not Hendrix'. Some of my favorite covers that are better than the originals are:

Stevie Ray Vaughns cover of Hendrix' "Little Wing"
Stevie Ray Vaughns cover of Hendrix' "Vodoo Chile"
Red Hot Chili Peppers cover of Stevie Wonders "Higher Ground"
Rage Against The Machines cover of Springstings "Ghost of Tom Joad"
Larry Grahams cover of Al Greens "Love And Happiness"

Sure I love covers, they can give new life to a song...except when they do them too soon after a song comes out.

Anyhow a couple come to mind-
Clint Black's cover of Long Cool Woman by The Hollies and
Garth Brooks with Huey Lewis on Workin for a Livin.

Agreed. I like Dylan's version a lot, but Hendrix's cover is probably one of the best covers ever.

There have been lots of covers that smoked the original. Off the top of my head:

The Who's cover of Elton John's "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting"

Red Hot Chili Peppers' cover of Stevie Wonder's "Higher Ground"

Aretha Franklin's cover of Otis Redding's "Respect."

The Byrd's cover of Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man."

Johnny Cash's cover of NIN's "Hurt."

William Shatner's cover of Elton John's "Rocket Man."

Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard's cover of "Ballad of Poncho and Lefty."

Social D's cover of Merle Haggard's "Makin' Believe."

Dropkick Murphy's cover of Woodie Guthrie's "Blackout."

The Beatles' cover of "Twist and Shout."

The Alarm's cover of Dylan's "Knockin' on Heaven's Door."

Social D's cover of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire."

The Bangles' cover of Simon & Garfunkle's "Hazy Shade of Winter."

Social D/Mike Ness have many covers I like more than the originals. For example, 'I Fought the Law' and 'Ring of Fire'

I think No Doubt's version of "It's My Life", the original done by Talk Talk, is better.

I also agree with another poster about "Hurt"--re-recorded by Johnny Cash. Awesome sound!

Will to Power's "I Love Your Way/Freebird Medley", I always liked this version better than Peter Frampton's and I liked how they added a medley from Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird".

Kim Wilde's "You Keep me Hanging On", great cover version and I liked how she made it sound her own, her version is better than the Supremes' version and it's even better than Vanilla Fudge's version as well.

Tiffany's "I Think We're Alone Now", she made it sound her own and did a great job with it, of course I've heard her version before I've heard of Tommy James song and I wasn't impressed with Tommy James' version all that much cause I thought Tiffany did a better job with it.

Speaking of Dylan,Knockin' on Heaven's Door is a pretty depressing song but Gn'R made it a little less depressing
