I know this thread is about 90's bands. I have to mention Robin Trower. He was relevant in the 70's, 80's, 90's, and 2000's. I just like good guitar playing and interesting songs. Also, Los Lobotomys (Steve Lukather), and Eric Johnson.
1) Rage Against the Machine-
As a rock and hip hop fan, in my opinion RATM was the zenith of the blending of the 2 genres. Zack was a great rapper that could also scream and growl like the best of them; he was like the Bad Brains and KRS 1 becoming one person. Then there was Tom Morello’s tasty guitar riffs and experimenting with his guitar like turntables; the whole thing was a show in and on itself. The drum-bass rhythm section was the closest I ever heard to Sabbath. Their 3 studio albums are pretty solid, and their covers album is very fun to listen to. Regardless if one agreed or disagreed with their politics, the band rocked and the lyrics made you think.
2) Tool-
While RATM was making me thing about politics, Tool was exalting my spiritual being. Aenima was the first record I bought from them, and to this day I listen to that record constantly. When Lateralus came out I just thought this guys were on another spectrum as far as musical ability. Im a fan of progressive rock, and I think Tool exhausted all the possibilities of prog rock without losing their edge, image and message. I don’t care if they ever make another album, I have more than enough with their current catalogue.
3) The Mighty Mighty Bosstones-
This is a band that I love dearly. I have seen them live like 20 times. No pretentiousness here. Just pure ska-hardcore with great melodies. There was something about the singer’s death metal growl paired alongside traditional ska that just fascinated me. Many people know them for one hit, but before that they were tearing it down in clubs all over the US.
4) Alice in Chains-
My favorite from the “grunge” bands. Never sounded that grunge to me. They were more like doom metal with classic roc rock mix. The pairing of Layne staley’s vocal with Jerry Cantrell’s is unmatched.Jerry Cantrell is like the David Gilmour of alternative rock. His playing is just so distinctive.
5) The Cranberries-
This band got me through some hard stuff. There was a year that all I listen to was Bury the hatchet, my favorite album from them. I loved Dolores voice, and I thought the band was extremely talented. They sounded like The Cure with irish undertones. I was crushed when I heard Dolores passed. They were about to play together again and I was hoping to see them live one more time.
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless was the best 90s album ever.
