My wife and I are coming down to visit the Nashville and surrounding areas for a couple days. We are thinking of moving down from Michigan. Can anyone give me any info on what areas to check out? We do not have kids so schools are not a deciding factor.

Visit Franklin! Love that town. Lots to do, and not far from downtown Nashville.

What is your housing budget roughly? Do you know where you'll be working and what is an acceptable commute time for you? Rural, suburban, or more urban housing? That will help us narrow it down some for you.

We are looking to rent for the first year or two and would like to be around $800 to $1000 per month for a apartment or a small house. Not real sure where I will be working yet, but my wife travels for work and then works out of a home office when she is home so I would like to find a job with around a half hour commute. Suburban would be our preference.

We booked a room at the Hampton Inn Hickory Hollow in Antioch for our upcoming weekend visit. We booked this hotel because we had Hilton points to use for it so it was free for us. Anyone know if this is a ok area to stay in or should we book somewhere else? We will just be using the room to sleep at night, get up eat breakfast and then off to scout the Nashville and surrounding areas for the day.

Antioch might stir up some negative thoughts to some people here but for what you're doing it should be fine. If you're going to be here at all during any weekday though the traffic on I-24 is terrible.

I would book at the new Hampton Inn in downtown if you can. Then you could do the tourist thing and walk to Broadway/downtown area in the evening and drive out to the suburbs during the day to check out potential neighborhoods...

We ended up switching to a Homewood Suites in Brentwood. We were going to stay downtown but all the hotels charge $15 to $30 per night to park and the hotels down there also cost more points so the Brentwood area will work well for us.

An $800-$1,000 budget is a little tight but do-able from what I understand. It won't put you in the trendy neighborhoods, but you still should be able to find an apartment (assuming modestly reasonable sq footage) in some good areas.

As far as locations to check on once you arrive my first thought was to look in Hermitage or Donelson if your wife will be doing a lot of air travel as it is close to the airport. Even if she doesn't travel by air, it still is worth checking out. In fact, I'd probably look nearly exclusively in Davidson County since schools are not an issue for you. Other parts of town tend to have a good school premium built into real estate costs (not sure about rent, but I assume it's the same). Bellevue might also be worth a look if air travel isn't a big thing as it's on the opposite side of town as the airport. Lots of condos/townhomes and rentals in that area. Both Hermitage/Donelson and Bellevue should be within a 30 minute commute of downtown.

Great choice on hotel, in terms of location! Although trip advisor gave that Hampton Inn good reviews.

Your hotel is located in an area called Maryland Farms. There's lots of restaurants, fast food, and a convenient Publix. If you go south a little ways on Franklin Road, there is a Kroger shopping plaza with lots of casual dining. Bricks, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, McAlisters, sushi, mexican . . . . across the street is a Fresh Market which has take out salads and sandwiches, and a local place called Puffy Muffin.

Bellevue is on that side of 65 so you can check that out. Take Old Hickory west, a little jog on Hwy 100 and left on Bellevue Rd. If you go North on Franklin Road you'll eventually arrive in downtown Nashville, if you prefer not to take the highway or just want different scenery. Hope you have a good visit!
