I would love to see woodcocks living here in the west too but their ranges are only in the eastern half of the North American continent. They are such unique birds. So cute.

I've lived the vast majority of my life west of the Mississippi but spent a few years in NJ. Seeing woodcocks for the first time was a real pleasure. While there are other shorebirds that display bouncy bobbing behaviors (tattlers, some peeps, solitary sandpipers, etc.), there's nothing quite like a woodcock!
I've been counting them in the Woodcock Singing Ground Survey for the Dept of Interior for 18 years. One of my routes has a stop at a railroad crossing. Year after year, there's a male at the tracks. He's in the wide open and easy to see for the two minutes I count. I'm sure after all these years, it's been several different birds, but the results are always the same.
