Hello can someone identify this tree? I realize you can't really see the bark (or leaves since it was taken in winter), but it's the odd way the branches spike up that caught my attention and made me wonder what kind it is. Located in the northeast, if that helps.

Thanks

Best guess at silhouette is a catalpa of some sort.

This made me shudder. I get chills thinking about one summer when I went to a friends house and we were playing in the yard. There was a sheet on the ground under the tree that we thought was going to be for a picnic.

Her dad came out with a big rake and started beating the branches, and freaking catalpa worms started raining down on us!

The catfish we caught with those worms sure were tasty, though.

Sycamores aren't uncommon in this area, but the bark doesn't match up. I know you can't see the bark in these photos taken with my friend's phone, so it's a reasonable guess, they are massive trees! Your pic does have a similar thing going on with the spiky branches though.

I'll see if I can convince my friend to take a drive out that way with me again in a couple of months. Maybe I'm wrong about the bark, but I did think it was dark and rough - corrugated like.

Thanks both!
