We're seriouslyconsidering relocating to Pahrump and would love some feedback from local residents in that area and their reasons for living there.
Thanks,
Marshall

Marshall & family,
Pahrump is a very nice town. There is constantly something ongoing. The people are thee best and friendliest, most decent and polite people you will ever come across. This town is predominatly retired sector and family oriented. If you need to know more post again, and I will try to do what I can to help you out in your new venture.

I had read that there was an army testing ground near Pahrump? Is this true and what do they test for as I've read about nuclear tests back in the 50's in the dessert. Is Pahrump affordable and what is the lifestyle of the area. Do you know what an average house costs? My husband would be retiring but I would not, can you find good paying jobs there? What industry(s)?

The more affluent sections of Pahrump are defined by the abundance of double wide mobile homes and multiple disabled vehicles on the lots . . not that there's anything wrong with that . . just more of a "free spirit" mentality, as compared to the appearance oriented expectations of the homeowners association crowd.

Pahrump
Moving to Pahrump. Any information on land, housing, and jobs would be greatly appreciated. Especially areas to stay away from and areas I should see.

Parhump is in Nye County. That is the third largest county in the USA however its population level is still low enough that prostitution is legal. Since Parhump is close to Las Vegas, there are a number of brothels there so make sure you keep it in mind. The nuclear test site, Area 51, Tonopah Test Range are all far enough away that you do not have to worry about them. If you put in a well, make sure you put in a deep one as the water level is dropping due to the increasing population. All the roads in and out are two lane roads so do not expect to make a quick trip to LA. If you are into shooting sports, there is a 500+ acre gun range just to the east. I also believe there is a growing wine industry.

Greetings,

I lived in Pahrump for a time. I'll try to be as objective as I can, since everyone's tastes are different.

A previous poster mentioned that Pahrump has a free spirit mentality, which is a great way to describe the place. Pahrump is formally a town, not a city, despite it's population of 50,000+. Unfortunately, that means there is a lack of infrastructure common in a city. No abundance of sidewalks, lights, street signs, etc. This also means that there are no real zoning laws, which is a HUGE NEGATIVE for those seeking to purchase or build a home. Imagine spending $250,000+ on a brand new home and then having a double-wide manufactured home propped up right next to your place. This kind of thing happens all the time in Pahrump, so property values are affected accordingly. Lastly, the streets do not follow a traditional grid-pattern... especially in the south part of town (more preferred area). Streets & roads follow a strange zig-zag diagonal pattern, which can make getting to the main road (160) a headache.

Jobs : There aren't any, save for a handful of service-industry jobs in the hotels and retail locations.

On a positive note, there are some things to do and, if you like desert living, it does offer some good points. There are some hotels/casinos there, a gun range, a small airport, an offroad racing track, and a small winery. Vegas is about a 75 to 90 minute drive away. The drive to Vegas can be a dangerous one; jokingly called the "death-commute" by some locals. Expect speeding drivers going through sharp turns in a high-elevation mountainous environment.

Pahrump is good for some, bad for others. I hope this helps, best of luck!

The "[moderator cut] spam [moderator cut]" in post #4 was a link to a newspaper article about this highway . . but for some reason was viewed as advertising by the forum administrator.

I don't see anything wrong with having a brand new double-wide pop up next to a 250,000 IF it's one of the newer ones that looks just like any other house - the newer mobiles are beautiful and you get a whole lot more for the money than in a site built home. They had a triple wide displayed on the Hwy. leading into the town - 3000 sq. ft. for around 110,000 and it was gorgeous inside and out. I'm more concerned about how people take care of whatever they own, be it a mobile or a site built. Letting any home deteriorate, letting your front/back yard become a 'sanford/son' junk shop will definitely drive down the neighborhood values but if someone puts a new mobile home on the lot next door to me and keeps the upkeep of it and the property it sits on looking good then I'm ok with that. Sad that many have notions in their head about mobiles and the people who live in them.

Hello:

Per my web research Pahrump seems to be a very nice place to live, but what about commuting daily to LV...???
