I stayed in Elko for almost 2 months. Very insolated town. Salt Lake City is closest at 2-3 hours away. Limited medical resources. Nearly no shopping outside of JC Penny & Walmart. Never the less, Elko is an oasis for someone looking for wholesome traditional family lifestyle. It's a prosperous mining town. Everyone there is doing well, all shades, all shapes. Very Americana. There are these Ruby Mountains there with snow creating underground springs so the place is green, a real oasis. It also smells good. Pine, sage and lilac is everywhere. They have good food too, sorta French settler/American. They have 2 very good museums, a library, a downtown with movie theater, lots of ranches and those beautiful mountains. Once you get outside of downtown you need an off road vehicle.

Interesting comments!

We have been to Elko a couple of times - mainly on the way to the Ruby mountain wilderness. The wilderness is fantastic and will motivate us to visit again and again. The beauty as well as hiking we found there was at par with some of the NPs but without the traffic. No, you do not need a 4-wheel drive to visit them (unless in winter). I believe there are other wilderness areas nearby that are attractive as well.

I cannot comment much on the town itself as we did not spend much time there. Elko is 230 miles and, therefore, closer to 3.5-4 hour drive to SLC.

Not sure if you're still checking this site/thread, but I am curious about your (double) use of "traditional" and "wholesome." What does that mean, exactly? Straight/cis/married/Christian?? And how is it for people outside of those boxes?

Elko is a ranching and mining town. It’s a bit rough and tough. Blue collar and MYOB.

Elko is VERY libertarian and very independent.

Elko wouldn’t know what all the modern labels mean, wouldn’t care and would roll their eyes and walk away if you brought it up. Think Clint Eastwood or John Wayne
