I am a non-resident alien in Wisconsin - I study at UW Madison. I got an internship in New York, but I stayed in New Jersey, at a friend's place.
What taxes should I pay? I am able to make out so far that I should non resident taxes for New York. I am not clear whether I should do anything for New Jersey.
Was New Jersey your official permanent residence during your internship, or were you really just staying there while maintaining a permanent residence in WI? (Did you change your address with the post office, register a vehicle, etc?)
You will probably have to file taxes for New York and Wisconsin, but probably not for New Jersey, but I would double-check with a tax professional just to be safe.
you simply get a credit back to taxes paid to other jurisdictions...
if nj is your primary fill out sch abc..
if ny is your primary fill out 112-r...be careful of city taxes of which you'll have to prorate number of days lived/worked if part time res..but it sounds like you only worked in ny so you fill out non-res form and you don't owe city tax
I had a similar situation a couple years ago - was a permanent resident of RI for half the year, CA for the other half, but in-between worked an internship in NYC, living in NJ. I filled out tax returns for CA (part-year resident), RI (part-year resident), and NY (non-resident), but not NJ.
