She works a few blocks from GCT, that's why I'd been thinking a train that comes in there, either Metro North or something that was off the 7.
OK, well that's got nothing to do with living in NJ. Metro North is an NYC MTA system that comes down from Westchester County and Connecticut. Trains from NJ do not go into GCT. They either go to Hoboken, which works out mostly for downtown people who can take the PATH, or they go into NY Penn.
It might be best if she took a bus, then, into the PABT and either walked down 42nd or took that subway shuttle that runs E-W from the PABT to GCT. I think it's an "S".
When you say a few blocks, which direction from GCT?
If it was me, I'd look for something off of the metro north line so I'd focus on towns near there. I'd post this on the NY/Westchester page and see what they say. Maybe around Hartsdale or White Plains.
A single parent will want to keep the commute as quick/easy as possible.
It was a followup to my previous post where I suggested she look upriver or in Connecticut so she wouldn't have to commute across Midtown at rush hour twice a day.

The commute from CT is no picnic either. Even from the closest points in CT (Stamford/Greenwich, which are extremely expensive) you're looking at a minimum 45-minute commute just to get to GCT. So that may not necessarily be a better option.

Not necessarily, there are parts of Manhattan that are within her budget. But the "scary" parts of Westchester are going to have a very different scale.
You may suggest somewhere in queens along the 7 line. Sunnyside, woodside, jackson heights , east elmhurst? Good areas, get to grand central quick!
for example, from woodside, 20 minutes.
