Is it just me or is this year (with the start of school) the absolute worst Rt 80 East has been from exit 28 (Roxbury) to 40 (Parsippany) going east during the morning commute? Even leaving at 6:15 am it's backed up already (never used to be the case) and by 6:30 it's death. What is your experience?
No, it isn't. The worst was 2007-2013 when they were "working" on the same 1/2 mile stretch (where 80 meets 287). It went on for 6 years, with the actual work starting and ending in the last 6 months. That's how corrupt our state is.
But this year's traffic is nothing compared to back then.

Very true. And 6:15 used to be the magic time to escape with only slow traffic instead of stopped traffic. That time is now 6AM sharp. If you are not around exit 30 by 6AM, you are in for trouble.
So much so that living in the Rockaway-Byram Twp corridor, I would literally not take a job that required me to be on 80 between exit 28 and Route 287 at any time between 6:15 AM and 10 AM. It's just not worth it to give up that much of your life force to being in a herd with the other harried and desperate sheep. I also inform by buyers accordingly.
Thank you for that, there are enough people in that area anyway. I think you get used to it. I've been commuting from the Roxbury/Rockaway area to North Bergen (Metlife stadium area) for over 20 years, it's not TOO bad. Takes about 1 hour 5 minutes to work and back. I also wish I knew what causes the backup from exit 28 to RT 15, what a pain in the butt!

Today was pretty bad for a Friday, people can't drive in the sun!
...or in the rain, or when it is snowing, or in fog, or...
or an overturned truck, or a car fire, it goes on and on. It's ironic that as you get further east the traffic actually gets better. Rt 287 and 280 must take a big load off rt 80 heading east.

People don't know how to merge, you have 3 lanes of rt 80 traffic, that becomes 5 lanes where 2 lanes of rt 15 come in and then it narrows down to 4. Then when you get by rt 287 all these people can't orderly merge to the exit lane. The have to go along in the second or third lane then cut into the front of the exit lane causing people in the exit lane to have to break hard. Try driving a tractor trailer down that section and have to get onto 287 south. As a truck driver you have to leave some space between you and the car in front. The is ALWAYS A FEW ASSH*LES who don't want to get stuck behind a truck for all of 30 seconds on the entrance ramp so they cut over at the last minute.
Years ago I met someone on the unemployment line from New Mexico or something. He'd gotten laid off from his job and said he was going back to New Mexico. He summed up the drivers around here pretty well. He said, "Everyone has to be first!"
This was at least 30yrs ago, and things haven't gotten any better.
Rt80 also backs up in the am east and west bound around the Madison Ave, rt 20 area in Paterson. It goes from 4 lanes to 3 lanes back to 4 again, with heavy exits, and idiots who wait for the last second to exit.
Traffic would be cut in half if we just did one thing. BAN PENNSYLVANIANS!
