Is this the single most desirable place to live in NJ? Houses seem to disappear off the market within a day of listing--and for 20-30% over ask! This is a sincere question--not trolling: Why is Montclair so desirable?
5 train stations and a bunch of trendy restaurants and bars. Also, very liberal. Most wealthy areas are conservative. So if you’re wealthy and liberal you have limited options.
I lived there and its meh. Like the other poster some trendy restaurants and bars. Its a nicer town for those fleeing Newark and Bloomfield, and has a downtown for those locally to visit in Essex county.

What made it "meh?" Are there other towns that are comparable--for less money/taxes?

Morristown and Ridgewood are the only northern NJ towns I’ve been to that have a similar vibe to Montclair. Can’t comment on the taxes because these places have always been too expensive for me to take a serious look at.
Montclair was Yogi Berra's home base for most his adult life. The list of Montclair residents with fame or fortune in their background is long, and helped attract a lot of business, culture and money to that suburb on a level above the surrounding area. My best guess is a Montclair address has a premium attached to it due to this air of status.
I worked in Livingston in the early 1990s and I always liked walking around Montclair on a warm summer evening.
