There won't be a choice. That's what happened to my mom in PA. Fewer and fewer places offered full service. Dad died when she was 70 years old. She never got the hang of using those pumps no matter how many times I assisted her.
A few years ago, (maybe six or seven) I went with a friend/coworker to a writers retreat up in Vermont. She offered to drive. We needed gas in upstate New York, and apparently she did not know, or it had never occurred to her, that we would have to pump our own gas. This was a woman in her 50s. She had no idea what to do, so I got out of the car and filled the tank. Figured I'd pay anyway since she was driving. It was just so weird to me. I mean, I like someone else pumping my gas. I'm spoiled that way, grew up in Jersey, and I don't want to get out of the car. But sometimes you have to, and it's not a big deal. She is a genuinely nice, very pretty woman who probably got away with avoiding many inconvenient things by acting ladylike and looking helpless and batting her eyelashes. I was never that type of woman. Thank God she had me in the car.
But there are full-serve stations hidden here and there, as I found in my many trips to Canada. One time I was coming down I-81 and realized my gas was low and had no idea where the stops were going south. I saw a sign for an exit with the gas icon, and I took it. I drove a bit and suddenly found myself on the main street of some little upstate New York town I'd never known was there, and I pulled into the gas station fully prepared to pump my own, but it was a full-service station. I was shocked, but happy.
And in my alternate universe in a rural, lake-country area of Ontario, there is a gas station with a "country store" attached ten miles from the house where I stay, and they come out and pump your gas for you.

Yes, they say that in the beginning to ease the anxiety of those who don't want to pump their own.
Having lived in a state for 25 years where you pumped your own, I honestly don't see what the big deal is either way. To me it feels luxurious for someone else to pump it.

Plenty of full-service only gas stations in NY even though self-service is legal. In fact, my stepfather just sold his full service gas station which he ran for 40 years. I hate full service so badly I didn’t even get gas there while living around the block for years lol.
The latest Rutgers-Eagleton Poll finds that 73% of the NJ residents who were polled do not want to pump their own gas.
I prefer to do it myself, so I hope that the state legislature approves self-service gas in NJ.

Lotta hooey over nothing.
I like my gas being pumped, too, but I can pump.my own.
If a person can't operate a gas pump, they should not be driving a vehicle.

If a price differential between self and full serv similar to cash/credit were introduced, I how much (or little) it would take to change attitude and behavior?
I thought it was actually illegal now to charge different amounts between cash and credit for gas, so I was surprised to see that here. The rare full service stations in pump-your-own states are so overpriced only people who are desperate or unable to pump their own go there.
"Full service" in the old days meant they would check your oil, top off your windshield wiper fluid, add air to your tires, etc. It really was full service.
NJ is an odd duck. My son was amazed (jealous) that I can buy gas at Costco without being a member .
However, Ohio v AmEx did maintain payment card networks’ (PCN- Amex, Visa, MC, Discover) ability to prevent merchants from offering different prices for different credit card PCNs. But it does not affect merchants’ ability to charge a premium or discount for cash/debit versus credit.
