how is Hudson County this bad to drive in?? nothing is done right here..
1. already extremely narrow one-way streets with cars parked on both sides.. makes even an experienced driver likely to mirror check at least once or twice in their lifetime.. this is mainly a North Hudson (West NY / Union City) problem.. its like what the streets of Queens, NY turn into when cars double park, except that's just how it is in North Hudson all the time
2. these ****heads block off streets for variety of dumb reasons (usually construction) in the middle of the daytime.. then these geniuses (note the extreme sarcasm) also have the audacity to run the garbage trucks in the middle of the day as well.. the blocking of the streets in a a high traffic neighborhood with streets narrower than an anorexic girl already causes havoc with traffic.. then they have a garbage truck that can already barely fit in the tight street, blocking off all the other cars.. then all the other cars start honking and the whole street is pissed off including the residents that happen to be at home during the day
3. don't even get me started on Rt 1-9.. somehow every 18 wheeler truck in America goes thru 1-9.. on top of that, there's no proper lanes to make left turns, which causes these "left turn bombs" of traffic.. also causes lot of accidents..
4. speaking of 1-9, TONNELLE CIRCLE.. NORTH JERSEY'S PRIZED POSSESSION .. the worst POS intersection i've ever seen.. the only thing that can compare is where the Van Wyck, LIE, and Grand Central Parkway all hit in Queens
5. all the out-of-sync traffic lights throughout the entire county.. particularly Kennedy Blvd.. your light turns green, and the one 15 feet in front of it just turned red
seriously, the worst place in all of America to drive in.. and this coming from someone who's driven all around the 5 boroughs of NYC almost every week at one point of my life, and as well as the city of Boston, Mass
wanna develop serious, uncurable road rage in under 1 hr?? come drive in Hudson County
I got a kick out of this. You’re right on every point, can’t even argue with you. I grew up there and learned how to drive there so it doesn’t seem so nuts to me. I remember the little thrill you get when you’re able to squeeze by a double parked car in a narrow street without completely side swiping everything. Or when you find a parking spot that seems too small and the person riding shotgun says “you don’t fit” and you just respond with “challenge accepted.” West Side Ave is a good road to drive on if you’re trying to get somewhere fast but it only really helps if you’re trying to go from North Bergen to Secaucus or Route 3. Kennedy Blvd. is not too bad either (relatively speaking, of course), but it’s an absolute nightmare on Saturday afternoons. And the garbage trucks, well, you start to just learn their routes and know how to avoid them after a while.
Driving around northern Hudson County never bothered me much, probably due in part to the fact that wherever you’re going wasn’t going to be too far anyway. All those small towns cramped together. Now looking for parking…. A few years of that was enough for me to know that I wouldn’t be living there forever. After a certain age your friends won’t even want to visit as often because of the hassle looking for parking can become.

oh im from UC too.. i've never payed attention to the garbage truck schedule tbh lol.. i had to leave at 1 PM to go somewhere, only for a road to get blocked, all traffic getting rerouted to the other way you can turn on that tight one-way, and there was a garbage truck blocking that reroute..
i am what u call a very experienced tristate driver and have sped thru those tight blocks plenty but i've mirror checked once and i was not under the influence at all.. this doesn't even happen to me in Queens or the city..
im also a very much a driving type of person so i'm always going somewhere.. and i take West Side Ave a lot..

yeah definitely.. but not as bad as Tonnelle Circle.. also the completely out-of-sync traffic lights up and down Kennedy Blvd give me the worst road rage..
I agree with the OP on all points, but at least there is one thing that has improved over the years in Hudson County. I used to particularly dislike driving in Hoboken in the '60s, '70s, and even into the early '80s, because most of the intersections had no stop signs. As hard to believe as it might seem, the intersections that weren't controlled by traffic lights almost always lacked stop signs.
The first and second times that I drove there, I had close-calls a few times at intersections. Then, I learned that one HAD to stop at every intersection if he wanted to preserve his car's condition. The normal driving mode for the locals was to just barrel-through every intersection, and this led to a lot of fender-benders, accompanied by much cursing. And, of course, when I stopped at those intersections, the locals could be depended-on to honk their horns at me.
This situation existed back in the days when Hoboken was a true sh*t-hole. Once gentrification began, apparently the powers-that-be decided (for the first time) to install stop signs at Hoboken's intersections.

I've been here 15+ years myself, and I don't drive here
