Sparse work history and zero rental history is going to make it difficult.
Median income in my county in 2020 was 27,164 USD.

Minimum Wage is $12.75 USD, Fulltime jobs start at $25,500.

I would say that $30K is poverty if you are in an area in which that won't come close to paying the rent. The term "poverty" is relative. $30K in a small West Virginia town is a bit different than $30K in Beverly Hills.

I dont understand why OP cant just get a roommate.

You still would be independent.

$15 for a single person is not low income in NJ.

I do think the best option for the OP is to move where rent is cheaper, say Georgia or Arkansas

Even if you meant to type $15k per annum, that is definitely in the low income category. In 2020, an annual income of $17,609 officially qualified a NJ resident for poverty status. While I can't find a more recent figure, I strongly suspect that the "poverty line" in NJ is now higher than $17,609.

I saw a chart recently, depending on county, if you make less than ~$85k you are considered low income and eligible for section 8. Its a complete shame, I know a guy who has over 1,000 Section 8 Rentals (not in NJ) and he estimates 50% are just ripping off the Government, 25% could work but they don't need to with Section 8, and 25% truly need it.

$15 will be the minimum wage next year, but there are a lot of jobs that pay more. An advertisement when I walked into Shoprite is advertising $19 an hour for cashiers, and the Burger King had $22 an hour sign, a lot of factory work pays $20-30 an hour starting. There are a lot of opportunities to make more if you want to explore those option also.

This is the NJ Forum.

I mean ... it's debateable.

I've seen 70, 80, 90K noted as poverty level for one person here on CD Forum, so at least 30K is a little more within reason.

I know exactly what it takes me to live and I could on 30K. I'd have to cut out some things, like cable TV, and eating out, and maybe more expensive presents for family. Gym membership, maybe gone. Oh, and any retirement funds. That was a given.

But that, and finding a place to share, and I could live OK. I also have a paid off car, that helps.

I could still do a lot of the things I do now, and I don't consider that poverty.

In bad years, I'd be in the red some, so I'd need some cushion/credit. I never just throw out a salary and make a comment without knowing exactly how I can live off of it.
