I found it hard to get a bad bagel in NJ. In NC I find it hard to get a decent bagel.
You're right, NJ has amazing bagels pretty much everywhere. I've been out of state, and its just not the same. I believe the difference is that they boil them here verses places its baked outside of the area.
Can someone sell me on Alfa(#3?!?)? People here in The Woods rave about them, but I tried them once, and thought they were… OK. Plus, it’s a tricky location. Maybe I went in on an off day. May have to give them another chance.
One thing I do find funny is that whenever these “surveys” pop up, the true #2 bagel store in the country, River Road Hot Bagels in Fair Lawn, always shows up on the list while its crowsstown rival, Saddle River Road Hot Bagels, with the true #1 bagel in the country, rarely makes a charting.

NY Bagel Deli in Cary, near Tryon Rd. It’s the closest I’ve found to NJ. Walking in there, you’ll feel like you’re transported back to Bergen county. They have the cases with the 7 layer cake, black and white cookies and other assorted pastries. Add in a little bit of a surly attitude and you’re back up north.
