Last year we transitioned from lifelong apartment dwellers to home owners. There are four of us plus a baby. Boyfriend has been complaining that all of the bills are too high, so I'm wondering if he's right. We live in Middlesex County. What are the average bills like for a small house with five people?

Live in Middletown (Monmouth County) and we am signed up for the budget plans with First Energy (JCPL), NJNG and NJ American Water. I have a 2300 sq. ft back to front split level well-insulated and southern exposure. My electric ($112), gas ($93) and water ($40). Two adults (now) and in-ground pool.

My wife and I live in a very small 1BR apartment and our electric is about $20 - $24/month, except $65 - $75 June-Sept when we use the AC. Our gas is free (incorporated into the rent). Our electric company is PSEG. I also read on another forum that as soon as folks had a smart meter swapped in, their bill was slightly cheaper. Note, PSEG is in the process of swapping out all old meters and putting in Smart Meters.

Obviously a lot depends on your usage. Do you have central air? Are your appliances gas or electric? Do you have a pool or hot tub?

I have a pretty large house with three or four adults in residence typically; six BR, three baths.

The highest bill we have is for gas, especially in the winter if it's cold--heating our big old house can be difficult--so we're on the budget plan for that. Last year it went up to about $250. But our electric bill is never over $100 max even in summer because we only have a couple of window air conditioning units. We don't pay water (have a well) and our sewer bill is $114/quarter. (I think that's highly variable depending on where you live.)

2 people in my house

Electric $100 per month / $200 in summer
Water $300 per quarter - instead of raising property taxes our town raised the water bill.
Oil - $700 each month (December-March), $700 from April - November (this was the most expensive winter in our history as prices tripled over previous years).

Even with an electric car, my bill never crosses $200 except for in the summer when I may crack $300 in July and August. Our gas bill is usually around $80.

Coming from NYC, our utility costs are so much cheaper here that I barely even pay attention to them.

I’m that dad that is always yelling at my family because they’re always leaving lights and televisions on… but truth be told I haven’t even looked at my bill for about a year so I couldn’t tell you.

The truth is that lightbulbs (especially LEDs) cost nothing (fractions of penny a day) to run. Appliances are what eat up the electric bill.

I just got my electric bill: $103.05. That’s with my car, and we’ve been running the AC regularly already.
