It's an interesting idea to change school months. So many US public schools today are failing on the 8:30 to 2:15 pm (or similar) 180 day model. The original idea of 9 months of school was based on the farming economy. Winter months were deemed less busy on farms. This is pretty much irrelevant nowadays- and certainly in urban areas.
Only reasons not to change are ingrained as described in previous posts.

I know of no school that goes from 8:30am -2:15 pm. As for the Farming community I was under the impression that was Daylight savings time .
Just thought of this thread ..saw a post in an LBI FB group today asking why so many restaurants and stores were closing much earlier this week or not open at all. No staffing. College kids, teachers, and even HS kids with sports obligations all back home already.

Exactly, and its an absolutely shame were in the peak of summer in terms of shore weather and seasonal ocean temperature. The next 2 or 3 weeks are some of the best weeks of the summer.

This is not a new issue it's been going on for a century or more. Many of the Summer Hotels would hire employees from Florida Hotels for the Summer and they would all leave after Labor Day.
On the west coast, most schools start the second or third week of august. Even colleges.
ETA: does the east coast have any year round schools? I put my son in one (west coast) to save on summertime child care expenses. They only got the month of July off. School started Aug 1st.

Penn State started on August 14th.
