My mother told me the story about her aunt having a D&C, back in the late '30s, and Mom always wondered whether her unmarried aunt had actually had a pregnancy terminated.

There is. As the link pointed out, there are places all over the area where the baby could've safely been handed over. If the mother had the wherewithal to toss it in the trash, she could've just as easily taken it to the police station, the fire station, etc.

I know what your point was, as a teen then, I'm saying what I knew, no places to drop a baby like today. Not everyone could get to Newark for catholic charities if they even knew about it.
