Our family is looking to move out to NJ and are looking for homes either near lakes or near the shore. Were looking for a good mix of privacy and city life. By that i mean in driving distance to malls, shopping etc, but still able to have a good amount of land around the house (nothing major, just for privacy).
I noticed you posted in Long Island forum with a budget of $500K to $1 million. Are you really looking closer to $300K or does your "& up" really mean that higher range in NJ too?

300k was just the 1st number that came to my mind. 1M i really the max we'd like to spend. I just want to get a feel for the neighborhoods before I head out to drive around.

Sussex County (Land of Lakes) and/or Warren County sounds like what you are seeking. Somewhat Rural yet within 10 mins of all the shopping you'll need. In Sussex Co. - look at Stillwater (many lakes), Fredon and Green Twps. In warren check out Frelinghuysen, Blairstown, Hope, Independence... all great areas and you should find a great house with land. Good luck.
Here's a sample of what you can get in Frelinghuysen (warren co) for around your price range: 374K, taxes 7700/yr., 2.2 acres. This one even has central vac!!! Great Twp. - excellent elementary school.. good HS..10 mins. from Rt. 80... etc.

Sigh. Nice house. Why can't I get a house like that for 374K in Bergen County? That house would be 900K or 1M in a decent Bergen County burb.
Just hang in there..according to some of the doom and gloomers in here, you should be able to get that house in bergen for that price in the next few years
