Too bad most of the parades have gotten away from the real reason of St. Patrick's Day. to celebrate
St. Patrick and the counties of Ireland....Urinating in public and carrying around open containers should
be fined..when is enough, enough with bad behavior...Oh wait this is the generation who watch nothing
but Stupid reality shows, ie., Jersey Shore, the Kardashian sisters, Enjoy the parade and pee in a bathroom like normal people Please!!

Sure doesn't stop anyone from doing it though or puking either. When traveling on Bourbon street wear old, closed shoes!

Actually the original purpose of St. Patrick's Day parades in the United States was to show Irish pride, solidarity, and strength in the face of terrible adversity. The New York City parade started with a group of homesick Irish soldiers forced to serve with the British Army in the days before the American Revolution, but during the 1830s and 1840s when anti-Irish, anti-Catholic, and general Nativist sentiment was at an all time high (watch Gangs of New York), the parade took on new meaning. In the words of one my history professors the purpose of the parade was to say "We're here, there's a lot of us, and we're not going away!"

All that being said usually drinking in the street is overlooked by the powers that be on St. Patrick's Day which is the way it should be. St. Patrick's Day is supposed to be a festive occasion with lots of singing, dancing, and a celebration of pub culture which is so central to life in Ireland. That usually requires at least a little drinking. Public urination is disgusting though and should be dealt with accordingly. I will say that the Trenton parade (my hometown parade and the absolute best as far as I'm concerned) is a bit looser than Hoboken so I would encourage those folks to line up on Hamilton Avenue on the 13th. Tir Na Nog, strategically located along the parade route, has a large back lot and they always get plenty of port-a-potties for parade day-plus you can enjoy your Guinness or Smithwicks outside without fear of reprisal after singing "Go On Home British Soldiers" for the 15th time inside.

Interesting how a Roman kidnap victim was forced to be a slave in forced labor in the hills of Ireland, who yearned and ultimately escaped by the grace of God to return home to England (Brittania) to his wealthy family who owned slaves themselves. He then get's ordained and returns to Ireland to convert the people or Ireland to Christianity, sometimes getting beaten for it.

Badfish740 was right.
St. Patrick's Day as it's celebrated in America is entirely and cultural invention of Irish Americans.

Dude, urinating in the street is fun? Urinating in the woods is one thing, but not in daylight on a public street in a large town.

This is Hoboken's way of dealing with the frat boy nonsense. The parade has become a cariacture of itself. I don't know why anybody would go into those bars when you literally cannot move once inside.

This is coming from a guy who, while at Rutgers, received several public urination tickets. Come on, time to grow up at some point dude!

The Hoboken parade has become absolute amateur hour (as has Hoboken nightlife in general).
