I would definitely consider High Rolls as an alternative. When I was offered a job in Alamogordo, as a transplant, we ended up living in Las Cruces because Alamo was so depressing. However, with gas over $4 a gallon, a 60 mile drive is no longer feasible for most people. I am almost wondering if a 30 mile drive is.

Problem with High Rolls/Mountain Park is that very little is for sale there and what is for sale is expensive. There are more options available at that same elevation in The Orchards/Laborcita Canyon above La Luz, but anyone finding something affordable in that area needs to be aware of ever-diminishing water availability as Alamogordo's growth has depleted the aquifers. There are recently instituted restrictive state laws governing water usage, specific to that area (Laborcita Canyon especially).

I am looking for a place to retire to. High Rolls seems good. What can anybody tell me about the area? i want a place where I can't see my neighbors.

You don't say if you're thinking of buying raw land and building, or looking to buy a finished residence?

In terms of finding a building site, this is a mountainside - very few flat, easy-access opportunities.

As for buying something already livable, see my previous post here:

I'm speaking of both land and residences, but especially residences. Isolation from neighbors can be problematic in this day and age - with the easiest solution being a fence or foliage barrier on your property.

You might also look into Weed. It's between Timberon and Cloudcroft. Not many people living there.

Can think of a couple of places in the High Rolls area that are for sale and the view of neighbors is limited. That is unless you consider the deer, elk, bear, cougar etc. neighbors.

Go to High Rolls/Cloudcroft, you won't regret it. If you need to do shopping then just drive to Alamo. The weather and scenery is way better. There's some house there for sale under 100k that are nice for just 2 or 3 people.

Over the course of a year, the temperature typically varies from 29°F to 95°F and is rarely below 20°F or above 101°F and the relative humidity typically ranges from 14% (very dry) to 79% (humid) over the course of the year.
