I personally think we coulda used a fair bit more breeze the last month. I'm in a motel with 2 dogs. One of them needs to walk pretty good distances before he'll do his business. No fun when it's hot and sunny without shade.

Tonight we had a nice, pleasant breeze.

Everybody seems to like Cruces. The murder rate is under the US average too.

I didn't weigh in because I don't have enough familiarity with the state to do a best and worst. But I like Alamogordo. And from what I do know I'd put Las Cruces or Ruidoso second.

Surly and crude is not uncommon in most of the state. But it is an undercurrent belied with what is my experience that a lot of New Mexicans, even one's you'd never guess (face tattoos?), can be helpful to the point of selflessness and conviviality. That is not to say New Mexico does not have its social problems, but the 'locals-only' attitude that is prevalent in Santa Fe is the rule in New Mexico as a whole, not the exception.
I was called to task on this comment of mine by one of our fellow posters, and it caused me to reflect on the tone and content of this portion of my post. I responded with the following address to them, and I would like to quote it here to clarify my position:

"I hoped my comment would not be too starkly negative. I did try to express that on balance there is a far more positive social behavior in New Mexico than not.

However, there is a definite undercurrent of misanthropy in New Mexico as evidenced by our extremely high incidence of road rage, drunk driving, assaults, locals-only attitudes, and high rates of property crime which are evidence of people who don't care about their neighbors.

Just yesterday a friend told me they saw someone sitting at a red light throw a full soda cup at a dog hanging out of a car window in the next lane over. Probably not unique to NM, but certainly notable. (and infuriating!)

Even with those high rates of social deviance, I believe the good New Mexicans, who are in the definite majority, are above and beyond in expressions of kindness and solidarity with their fellow humans compared to other states I have lived in. It is one of the things I love about New Mexico, and why although I can't ignore the bad side of things, I always champion the state."

Brief reason for your chosen places would be delightful.

Top
1. Las Cruces-big city by New Mexico standards and is in the Southern portion of the state and has easy access to Texas and Arizona

2. Greater ABQ-most happening place in the Land of Enchantment

3. Ruidoso/Alamo/Cloudcroft/Carlsbad/Roswell-Cool mountain air in the summer ...lots of my fellow Texans vacation there.white sands and caverns and aliens and UFO stuff

Bottom

1. Cedarvale-Not many people live there anymore and is a long ways from anything including gas stations

2. Gallup-too cold and isolated for my tastes.

3. Clayton-Again too cold and isolated and is in the Northeast portion of state.
