The metal roll-down gate on storefronts, part of New York City's landscape for decades, will be officially phased out starting Friday, when a law takes effect that requires new gates to be partially transparent. All businesses will ultimately have to replace their current opaque gates, but have until July 1, 2026 to do so.

I know right....15 years might be too soon...I'd say 2030 would be more appropriate

The manufacturers of the new, partially transparent gates must have a huge contract with the city! What possible difference could this make, other than to saddle store owners with a new expense?

Don't worry about the store owners, the price will be passed down to the customer. Not to mention the additional insurance premium to cover potential glass breaking and the injuries suffered by the perp who will sue the building/store owner for maintaining an attractive nuisance.

It's a win win.

If the appearance of safety gates on commercial establishments is what the city administration is worried about, then we are in DEEP doo-doo.
Reminds me of Giuliani's preoccupation with J-walking.
Who CARES how a proprietor deems the best way to keep his store safe.

Ah, yes. From that standpoint, it's easy to see why the city would suddenly be promoting such a plan.
