I'm moving from Boston to the East Village with a UHaul truck on a Saturday morning in September. I've driven into Manhattan in a car many times, but never before in a truck. Does anyone know the best route that allows trucks?
of anything but I 95 for that trip. I 95 to I 278(Bruckner Expwy) in the Bronx, bypass the Triboro Br if you want to avoid the toll, to the Deegan (I87) to the Third Avenue bridge
i don't know if they allow trucks on the FDR drive going south to 15th street or Houston St, if they don't you'd have to schlep all the way downtown for about 7 miles on 1st Avenue
If you can travel down FDR, that's the best. But if there are truck restrictions try 95> 678> 495> Qns Midtown Tunnel (2 tolls) or 95> 678> 495> 278> Williamsburg Bridge (1 toll) It's not much longer considering your total trip miles and, to me, would be alot better than schlepping 7 miles down 1st Ave. At least it's a Saturday.
i am rusty on the 3 digit interstate codes lately!!
maybe take the Triboro into Queens, south on the BQE (278) into the Gowanus to an exit where you can get to the W'burg Br (I don't know Bkln well) whatever/wherever that may be
OK.... According to Wikipedia there are weight & commercial restrictions. " By law, the current weight limits on the FDR Drive from 23rd Street to the Harlem River Drive in both directions is posted 8,000 pounds (3,600 kg). Buses are not allowed to use the roadway north of 23rd Street, because of clearance and weight issues. All commercial vehicles (including trucks) are banned from all sections of the FDR Drive.
