Well, it looks like yesterday's POSSIBLE NYC hit has become today's PROBABILITY.
New York sits like the spout of a funnel formed by New Jersey and Long Island and any storm surge can be magnified immensely into the harbor.
My scare:
The subway stations near the harbor. I'm thinking specifically of South Ferry and Bowling Green which cannot be more than a dozen feet above sea level.
A few years ago with another surge possibility. Even though the storm missed the City, the station entrances got AWFULLY close to the water.
Does anyone know if the MTA wisely put some kind of sorm doors that could be slammed closed and watertight to prevent station flooding. Fred, anyone?
Are all the stations in the Rockaways elevated?
I don't think PATH at Hoboken and Newport bothered to upgrade even after a Winter storm cascaded millions of gallons into the line shutting the system down for weeks.
So get your shopping done today and don't forget the liquor and beer. Don't wait to join everybody doing last minute shopping Saturday and Sunday. Store some water for drinking and cooking, I just filled my handy-dandy 5 gallon container.

I would love a day off from work next week but the storm has already weakened to a category 1. I'm not sure it's gonna be much more than a heavy rainstorm when it arrives. I guess we'll see.

it might get stronger as it travels up the coast and gets next to that cold front i think
If it is going to be so bad, how come I am not hearing the dire warnings like I did before Irene?
Is it more likely to be a bad noreaster or an actual hurricane?
