Basically, this article is saying immigrants who move to the city often don't get jobs that pay good benefits ,and often they haven't paid much into social security. So basically, when they retire, they will get little, of any social security benefits and end up in extremely DIRE situations.

To a not much lesser degree, this is also going to be a problem with transplants as many of them do not have fortune 500 jobs or government jobs that pay excellent benefits, including retirement. So if they don't go back to the suburbs or the Midwest, places like Williamsburg are going to be scary in 20 and 30 years, full of aged hipsters eating out of the garbage. People's incomes go down as they retire, but rents in NYC have only been going up. So already we're starting to have a crisis with the elderly (as I've noticed more homeless young people in Manhattan).

When someone rents their whole life instead of buys, increased rent costs is the risk that comes with it.

If you can't afford Manhattan, or Williamsburg, or wherever, then find a place you can afford. If they'd prefer to eat out of dumpsters so they can be in their desired location, well be my guest. Please just don't leave a mess on the sidewalk for me to have to look at.
