First thread I’m making but a interesting one . I’ve lived in both situations , I lived in south Jamaica queens which is a High crime area but the actual house I lived in was in was very nice , my grandmothers house has a full lawn , driveway and backyard . On the other hand I live in Harborview terrace which is a housing project in Hell’s Kitchen Manhattan which is around 55/56 street and 10/11th ave. It has very good food options , right in the midtown with a quick commute going uptown or downtown. Very nice neighborhood and feel . The building has its fair share of poor conditions since its nycha like roaches , ppl hangin in the staircase , vandalizing etc but it’s not that bad and the advantage of the percs around the area and the rent being less then 300 dollars lmfaooo it’s worth it

So yea would rather live in a housing project in a good neighborhood or a very beautiful house / apartment in a area that is not so good

Damn this is a very interesting question, I wouldn't mind either but would probably choose a good house in a bad neighborhood mostly in Brooklyn or Queens because atleast there, there are some good blocks and bad blocks so I can find a decent block in a bad neighborhood.

Depends on personal circumstance, but I am much for the latter category.

Always pick a good neighborhood first, then find what you can afford in it. You can sometimes do something about a bad apartment or pissy landlord in a reasonable amount of time. It's a lot harder and takes a lot longer to get an entire neighborhood to change.

Isn't the real estate cliche, "location, location, location"?

Not necessarily in NYC at all. Many NY'ers go for space, space, space....both sq ftg and overall vibe... over location.

"Bad" areas are usually very far from transit and that's why they're undesirable. OP is lucky af to get into a midtown NYCHA. However you'll have to go all the way uptown for groceries.

Growing up in bushwick projects in the 80’s/90’s I can live anywhere and not have a fear or worry. Must important is rent and traveling distance to work (45 min commute is reasonable for my taste. So either one is fine.

Quality if neighborhood > quality of home.

Human beings are simply not conditioned to do things like that. Look at the census tracts for what would be considered bad neighborhoods and the people making over 100K are always at a very low percentage. Because to afford the good house, you need good money.
