Brent Sikkema, co-owner of a prominent New York art gallery, found dead with 18 stab wounds in his Rio de Janeiro apartment.

Local LE promptly zeroed in on a suspect and have made an arrest. Details so far are sketchy but it does not seem as if this was a random attack.

18 stab wounds all over the body.. police say it looks like theft leading to homicide. I say sex for pay leading to theft and ultimately homicide. And anyone who takes a hustler home in Brazil must be nuts or on drugs, maybe both.

Seems like he may have been dealing more than just art.

Lots of loose ends...

Deceased was in middle of a messy divorce from his much younger Brazilian husband. They have a 12 year old son together.

Hold up was young Brazilian husband wanted $6 million in divorce settlement. Sad thing is unless decedent made other arrangements (as in final will and testament) the widower spouse gets entire marital estate.

It seems as if murder and victim may have known each other previously, meeting last year or something. In any event this wasn't anywhere near a random crime. Killer staked out victim's apartment building for several hours and seemed to know he had lots of American and Brazilian money in cash.

It's the 12 year old kid you feel sorry for. Bad enough is parents were divorcing, but now this. Hope someone is looking out for the kid's best interests.

Some people mix with certain types abroad that they would avoid at home. That's why many do things abroad they would never do at home and then complain but never letting others know that they were like a different person while abroad. It really isn't an apple-to-apple comparison.

For example, someone from a solidly middle class standing has friends that they too are middle class, but then when abroad they don't search for the middle class locals but rather go with the poor. Then they do what no local middle class would ever do, invite a local poor person to your very middle class home and neighborhood. There are things you take for granted, but they are noticing that you have a large flat screen TV when no one they know do, that your home is airy unlike any home they have ever been to, even things like noticing the roof of your home are red tiles while everyone they know lives in homes with zinc or cement roofs. In many places a tile roof is something you normally see in rich and middle class neighborhoods and not in poor ones, so they are a marker of having money (either rich or simply have more money than me.) They are noticing the cars in your garage, the type of floor in your house, that you have a pool, even the landscaping. There is a reason the local middle class doesn't invite poor people into their house and it isn't classicism or raising up your nose, it's simply common sense.

Now, there is nothing wrong with the poor per say, but when you add cultural differences that are par for the course regardless of social class and then add to that social class differences that you never knew at home because everyone you know is from the middle class, things can go wrong very quickly. You should get the hints of how to act from the local middle class if you have been a middle class person since the cradle. They have been middle class in that place for far longer than you. They know how to act and what is a no no for a middle class person in that place.

You also see this within the nationality. They become friends with someone else on the basis that they too are American knowing very well you steer clear of that type of American while in the USA. There are people who have a different approach to many things. Morals is one of them. If at home you don't hang with people that sleep with hookers, what makes you think it will be different abroad? Because its a different language?
