The rates of life-threatening leptospirosis, dubbed as “rat urine infection,” reached an all-time high in New York City, health officials warn.

Twenty-four cases of leptospirosis were reported in NYC in 2023 — the highest number in the last two decades, according to the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.

Horrible experience decades back. Housing.

Vandalized buildings. Broken bulbs. Darkened stairwells.
Stepped on weeks old bloated dead rats.
Exploded on contact. Breathed in a Mouthful of " fill in the blank "
Next day 104 Fever. Doctor. Antibiotics . Out sick. Nasty recovery.

IIRC 24 cases reported in 2023, of that 21 were DSNY employees.

https://abc7ny.com/rat-urine-disease...says/14727045/

https://www.contagionlive.com/view/r...atic%20failure.

Keep in mind these are *reported* cases of Leptospirosis infections. Persons without access to healthcare and or where doctors or other healthcare professionals don't properly diagnose much less report suspected infections obviously aren't counted.

Many homeless and others who "dumpster dive" or otherwise dig through trash bags or containers may become ill from something, but for host of reasons do not seek medical attention. Either infection eventually subsides or rises into complications leading to death. In latter instance unless a post mortem is done cause of death will not be established nor reported.

Where you stood on the subway platform has tons of rat urine. And then you stepped on their urine and the viruses are attached to your shoe bottom. Then you walk home and into your house slowly spreading the virus all over and where ever you walked wearing your shoes.

Leptospirosis is bacterial, not viral.
