From the Albany Times Union: "Sure, exploring the 180-mile corridor from Grand Teton to Yellowstone National Park on foot or by bike is cool. But that rail trail can’t beat the one that winds through our backyard.
New York’s 750-mile long Empire State Trail, which runs from New York City to Canada and Albany to Buffalo, bested all others from coast to coast in Outside Magazine’s ranking of the top 25 rail trails in the U.S.
New York bookended the list. In addition to the Empire State Trail at the top, New York State’s 7-mile Keuka Lake Outlet Trail, which runs from Penn Yan to Dresden in the Finger Lakes — along which people can view the 40-foot Seneca Mills Falls — was ranked 25th.
“There’s a lot of abandoned rail lines all over the country that are being converted into walking and biking trails,” Seth McKee, Executive Director of the Scenic Hudson Land Trust and Land Programs, told the Times Union: Hudson Valley earlier this year. “It’s been great for local economies and quality of life.”
