Just tossing this out.. I had about 30 minutes to look at the vehicle this past weekend and couldn't really dig in to do full testing.. Just wanted to toss this out and see if anyone is familiar with these, and if you concur with my partial diagnosis based on what I found.

2005 Titan.. Problem is, you turn the key.. No crank. Problem apparently started out that this would happen, but eventually you would get it to turn over if you turned the key 3 or 4 times. No indication of security stopping things. I don't know if Nissan's security disables crank or disables fuel (GM usually disables fuel) but.. I don't see security being an issue.

I didn't have my tools to do great testing.. But, I was able to check that power was on the wire leading to the starter.. I hear what I believe to be the starter solenoid clicking when the key is turned.. I can't be 100% certain, but it's coming from that area.. The starter, you have to remove the intake manifold to access it and I didn't have that much time.

So, I verified that based on the sound of the solenoid closing, the ECU was sending the command out to engage the starter. I couldn't test that the solenoid was good.. I couldn't test that power made it all the way to the starter, though, I was able to ID the wire coming off the battery and it has power at that end.

I basically diagnosed it as either..

A) Bad Starter
B) Bad Solenoid that is clicking but not closing
C) Bad wire from the battery to the starter

Anyone more familiar with the Titan that thinks I've missed something here? It's always those crazy gremlins that get you.

I told him to find the solenoid and verify power on one side of it.. Then turn the key and check power on the other side. If you never see power on the other side, the solenoid is bad internally. If you don't have power on either side, that wire from the battery is broken somewhere. If you see power always on one side, and power on the other when you try to crank.. Bad starter.

And, if you needed to drive it to a shop, short the terminals on the solenoid if you have power on one side. Should start to get you there. Of course.. Since you'd have the intake off to get to the starter.. That.. Probably won't work.

Anyone see problems with my testing and theory?

I'm leaning towards this being a bad starter. I'm kinda betting if we whacked it with a hammer while turning the key, it'd fire up.

Just in case anyone hits this in the future.. It was the starter. Integrated solenoid on it, apparently.. I wasn't there for the fix, they just replaced the starter and all was well.

I had this issue on my 05 Titan as well. Mine turned out to be a bad ignition switch. It would sometimes not start until I took the key out and put it back in 5-7 times. Eventually it would start.

I talked to the dealer and they mentioned that the 05 and similar model years had an electrical issue relating to the ignition. I ended up trading it off for a newer truck but it appeared to be an easy fix.
