Definitely safe. There will be jerks everywhere, but don't be surprised by a few stares. Most people would be very nice toward you, but maybe a bit surprised (especially at your husband). Just be yourself, not someone else.
Race is what you make of it. Yes the area is predominately white Scandinavians, but there are plenty of people moving into the area and it is becoming more diverse.
If you make race an issue, you will probably have problems, if you just live life as though there are not problems, then there will be not problems.
The former president of the school board is black, and VERY well accepted and respected.
Do you have any likes as far as getting involved in the community? Arts, chamber of commerce, or other organizations? If you do, I would get involved right away, and I think you will be very pleasantly surprised at how welcoming North Dakota can be.
I dont live in Jamestown but in fairmount and if the rest of ND is like my town you wont have any trouble. This is a very nice state. And I wish it was more races in it. I think that would be great.
The racial-harmony issue and how to survive the winters were two questions I had about working/living in North Dakota...and I'm glad to see the first one pretty much put to bed. I wonder if it's because unless you live in a neighboring state, North Dakota sounds like a big, homogeneous place where everyone sounds like an extra from _Fargo_...?
I spent most of the 90's moving around North Dakota while I was involved in a relationship with a black woman. Never heard one comment, or had one inappropriate look while out in public. If you have a kid, he might hear something stupid at school from a wannabe bully, but that's probably the extent of any problems.
Thank you so much for all of your responses! I've only been through ND once on my way from Seattle to Chicago so I didn't have a chance to get a feel for it. I'm looking forward to it.
whites only should be posted everywhere. lol. a joke
