So, my fiance works in the oil industry and we hear that it is doing great in North Dakota. What are some safe cities in North Dakota? I am looking for safe neighborhoods as well as good schools, and a place that has a great sense of community. I am very much into small towns, but close to a larger city if necessary. Also, I was wondering how acceptable people were to other races. I know this may sound like an odd question but we are African American, and I not sure how diverse North Dakota is. Or if there are places that we should stay away from. Any help would be great! Thanks!

I just spent some time there last year. You might try the Minot area. There seemed to be more of a variety of people there. A lot of transplants. I worked with different races when I was there, and I never saw anyone show any problem. But I know Fargo is supposed to be pretty diverse too. It's funny, when I heard how crazy Minot was supposed to be with crowds, etc, I was surprised to see that it was a small town. I guess for ND, it qualifies as being big. Anyway, there are great people up there.

I am wanting to head back that way myself, but am trying to insure I have a job before making the trip again. Unfortunately I have not heard back from anyone yet. Good luck!

Hi ajanl1989,

You might want to look at this thread: https://www.city-data.com/forum/north...-minot-nd.html

Minot would be a good bet for your family but between a flood that wrecked many houses there in 2011 and the oil boom, housing is a little tighter than other areas of the country. You might want to browse the Minot Daily News website, realtor, com, zillow, etc... to check on that. like steel23974 said, local old timers will complain about the crowds but it's nothing like a large metro area. so it takes 10 minutes to get across town instead of 5? I've heard some complaints about groceries too but I can't compare as I haven't shopped outside of ND in a few years. Again, look for websites for Marketplace Foods and Cashwise Foods in Minot. There's also a Walmart, a Kmart, Target, etc...

Minot still seems pretty safe to me when I'm there. Again, I would refer to the local paper and look for some statistics. Cheers!

Williston is growing with people from all backgrounds. Some of the locals might not like "strangers" of any kind, but I don't think an African American would be out of place there. There are several African Americans who moved early in the recession to Williston and are now respected leaders in the community. Williston is upwardly mobile to anyone, in my view. Minot and Bismarck would be harder in that respect, because they don't need new people as badly.
