Wanted to know cause I'm considering making the move to North Dakota and being able to see the northern lights is a big priority for me, unfortunately I can't afford to go to Alaska.

As far as I know, never. I've lived here since 1999 and never seen them or heard of them being visible from here (Bismarck). Maybe it's different on the northern end of the state though.

I saw them on November 4th of this year. Pretty cool to sit at my kitchen table with my coffee and watch the light show.

Yup. They were straight over head this time. Like looking up at curtains.

Where did you & NDak15 see them? I'm just wondering about approximate locations. My parents grew up on farms in SE North Dakota (between Jamestown & Ellendale) & talked about seeing them in winter only but it was a LONG time ago...something on my bucket list.

Was this an unusual sighting?

It’s not unusual at all to see the northern lights in ND. Here’s a time-lapsed video shot in Grafton, ND which is north of Grand Forks.

Thanks, both of you. So, basically NE North Dakota. What time of year is best? I'm in NW Washington (state), but it's always too cloudy to see them.
