I am just wondering because one person said that places like Grand Forks get too cold for salt to be effective.

I've never experienced any Winter where it was too cold to use salt.

I know that it's not the most environmentally friendly solution, but it's the most widely available and cheapest. Especially if you stock up at the end of Winter / beginning of Spring when the stores clear them out for cheap.

And I think salt (or sand) is absolutely necessary if you shovel your sidewalk. Otherwise you end up with a slippery walk where people can easy fall.

Salt is mainly useless below about 10 degrees, certainly below zero.

Since Grand Forks is routinely below zero in the dead of winter - yep, no use for salt.

Here in Nebraska the Walmart carries a couple of magnesium chloride ice melt products that state good to -10, and online they show colder than that.

Unless you have a ton of sand, putting just a bit of sand over ice quite possibly the worst combination.

I don’t yet really know what you’re supposed to do about ice. It’s not a skill I’ve acquired. I’m not exactly up in snow country voluntarily, and I’m not that motivated to put much time or effort into learning skills I deliberately and specifically do not want to ever use again.

I prefer salt, but be warned, if you have a nice car or truck....You're gonna be staring at some rusted out panels on your vehicle.

This is why I get the truck sprayed with Krown rust inhibitor every fall We use a lot of salt/salt slurry in Canada. The rust inhibitor not only keeps your vehicle looking new, it prevents electrical gremlins caused by corroding electrical contacts as well.

Yeah good points about corrosion on your vehicles during winter. Very important to get it washed every week or two weeks!
