Does anyone know what is planned for the shopping center (named Fairfax Shopping Center) on Fairfax Blvd between University Blvd and Chain Bridge Rd?

It used to house quite a few businesses including a furniture store and Hooters which has now moved to the old Outback location. Now it only has Patriot Bar and a florist shop from what I saw. There have to be plans for this area since there aren't For Lease signs up. Will it continue as retail or switch to housing?

Fairfax: Looking into the Future

In 2014, the Fairfax City Council took the first step toward revitalizing the aging Fairfax Circle Plaza by approving a huge, new, mixed-use project there, entailing a grocery store, retail businesses and multifamily housing. The goal is to attract new business and revenue to the City while turning a 1960s strip shopping center into a modern place for people to live, work and dine.

#Combined Properties Ltd. will redevelop the 9.8-acre Fairfax Circle Plaza shopping center with a 54,000-square-foot grocery store, 34,000 square feet of retail and restaurants, plus 400 apartments. It also proposed a signalized intersection at Fairfax Boulevard.

#Planned are residential units in a walkable design, with structured parking, instead of surface, and improved stormwater management. Building will be done in quick phases, with residential building construction concurrent with a phased occupancy. Harris Teeter is expected to be the grocery store, and its site must be turned over to it prior to any residents moving in.

This is for Fairfax Circle (where Peter Pan Buffet and Staples was) not the Fairfax Shopping Center.

City is rebuilding the site on both sides of 123 to fix drainage issues. The city would love to redevelop but there is no interest at the moment and there is an uncooperative owner of the strip mall. Sounds like its a to be continued conversation

As you know, the Hooters has moved to the old Outback site next to Freddies

So this site now has almost every business besides Patriot's Bar closed down. I still can't figure out what's going on. Anybody have a clue?

One business says that they all have to be out no later than December, so something must be afoot.

For many years, the last store in that shopping center (hooter's end) was a Dept of Motor Vehicles office.

Many a wide-eyed teenager parallel parked around back on their driving test.

I got my driver license at the old DMV up on Main St & Chain Bridge in 1966. Wasn't long after that they moved to the Fairfax Shopping center location....maybe '68 or so. The Hooter's building was built years later.

Ahh the center near the ship hotel.

I remember the furniture store and East Coast Sunset, and of course Hoots.

For the new condos at the old Hooters Center, I have the perfect name:

Hoot Suites.

Ha.

Where did you hear that they would be condos? I'd love to know if that were the case.

I didn't--but it seems like that's usually part of the design with mixed-use redevelopment. I just hope the new building has some orange trim on it, as a tip of the hat to its former, uh, glory.
