"St Augustine" as far as "The City of St Augustine" for statistical purposes is a small area (12 square miles, less than 1/2 the size of Hammond) that encompasses a college and historically black neighborhood, however "St Augustine" is used as a shorthand for St Johns County, which is #1 in Florida for Household Income, Family Income, highest performing primary education, some of the lowest unemployment, has houses like this...

... whereas the lions share of contemporary Hammond is a typical post-industrial wasteland of drunkards, addicts, Social Security Disability professionals in a state of terminal decay.

You're definitely not going to win a 'comparison battle' between Hammond, Indiana...

and St Augustine, Florida.

Read Sun Tzu. Don't engage in battles you cannot win.

Alright, I need to get involved in this "battle."

You are going to compare a single torn up house in Hammond with photos of the nicest looking tourist attractions in St. Augustine...makes complete sense. I've found many houses for sale in St. Augustine that look terrible. I've visited many of Hammond's incredible tourist attractions. Hammond has outstanding bike trails throughout the city, including a scenic bike trail that leads strait through & around Wolf Lake. The main tourist attractions also in Hammond are; The Horseshoe Casino, The Lost Marsh Golf Course & restaurant, Cabela's Retail Store, and The Pavilion. The Pavilion holds free concerts in July of every year, with artists such as Pat Benatar and LL COOL J.

One ugly house in Hammond does not represent the whole city...
One last thing... The Hammond SouthShore station is safe

True, and true. Your selection of photos is ridiculously biased. And this almost-senior female doesn't think twice about taking the South Shore from Hammond.

Regarding the actual question about the train station's safety...why not think of it like this:

The majority of people that use the Hammond station for commuting to/from work do not reside in Hammond. Most are coming to Hammond from the towns to the south, specifically Munster, Dyer, and St. John. If the train station was supposedly so dangerous, do you think all of these white collar workers would be putting their lives in such danger on a daily basis? Nah.

Also, the question was not "is the town of Hammond a safe place?", it was specifically about the train station itself and normal daily commute for work during the normal work hours that were stated. I don't think many, or any, on this board would recommend Hammond as a great place to live and raise a family. However, to use the train station, park your car, walk to the platform, then do the opposite on the trip home...that's not dangerous at all. We're not talking about leaving the train station and wandering around the town by yourself at 3am.

To the original poster... yes, it's perfectly fine and safe for the purposes that you will use it for.

What is with the people who live in Florida coming on here to talk about how awful they think NWI is? I certainly don't care to go see what's going on in Florida forums, since I don't live there or have a desire to live there.

Admittedly, my post was hyperbolic and intended to deliberately satirize the tragic post-industrial dump Hammond has become but really; LAUGHING MY ASS OFF that you suggest Hammond has 'tourist attractions'.

Baghdad has its Visitors Bureau talking points but seriously, here we go again down the no intellectual integrity rabbit hole as people seriously suggest that Hammond has "tourist attractions" beyond being the closet Casino to Chicago.

Home-teamers are so LOL.

Some people have lived in both places and know what an absurd statement it is to say that the Hammond SS stop is "perfectly safe".

I mean, two weeks ago some old man was just robbed there.

Man, 31, charged in robbery at Hammond train station

These Pollyannas saying its 'perfectly safe' are liars- either delusionaly lying to themselves or deliberately lying to others.
Its in the middle of a crap area, surrounded by crap people.

I am laughing about you believing Hammond is a "tragic post-industrial dump."
I am also not suggesting Hammond has tourist attractions. I am telling you Hammond has tourist attractions. The Horseshoe Casino was the closest casino to Chicago for years, bringing in tourists visiting Chicago. The Horseshoe is still one of the most popular tourist attractions in Indiana. Entertainers perform at the Horseshoe Venue often, also bringing in visitors from all of the Chicago area. The Pavilion holds free concerts every single July for the Festival of the Lakes. Pay the parking fee, and you are enjoying a performance from a popular musician. Thousands of people are watching performances every single day. Also at the Festival of the Lakes is a carnival, which alone brings in thousands of people every single day. The festival also has motorboat rides around Wolf Lake all for free. Another popular attraction is the Lost Marsh, a vibrant golf course with a hilltop clubhouse, just built several years ago. This clubhouse is a Frank Lloyd Wright style building featuring a spectacular restaurant with scenic views and spacious outdoor seating. Out of the tourist attractions I had mentioned, these three are the most well known.

Have you ever been to the Towle Theatre? If not, let me suggest it!

One of the best things about NWI that really isn't spoken about much, is the vibrant community theatre community. I believe there are (at least) 15 theatres spread throughout Lake, Porter & LaPorte. In the coming months you could see Les Miserables, Vagina Monologues, Willy Wonka, Addams Family, Jane Eyre ... lots of talent in the Region.

As for the Festival of the Lakes - I've heard so far it's Charlie Daniels Band this year ...have they released any other names?

I'm telling you that Gary, Indiana and Detroit also have 'tourist attractions' but nevertheless aren't very high on anyones list of places to go visit.

Everything you cited as being a great 'tourist attraction; is barely bush league, hardly rising above the level of routine municipal events that any town, anywhere, is going to always have. A lake, a festival, a golf course... oh yeah, crime squalor, filth, stink, more crime, ghetto, gangs...

Get real. Suggesting Hammond is ripe for 'tourism' is as pathetically off base and dishonest as the clowns earlier who were calling the Hammond SS stop- in the middle of a crap area- as being "perfectly safe" a couple weeks after a senior citizen was violently robbed there.

I can deal with people who can't let go of the past lying to themselves about what the neighborhood has become but on a forum like this, watching you people lie to others just just disgusting.
