$60K/year (or a combined $120K/year with a spouse) doesn't go very far in a lot of places, much less California. Hell, many years ago I had a friend in California that made $70K/year and needed a second job to pay for her mortgage.

Well, $120k doesn't go far in SF metro, LA metro, or nice parts of OC.

It would go far in the Inland Empire, or Vacaville, or Bakersfield, but the lack of middle class jobs makes living in those areas very difficult. Too bad politicians in the state don't care about job growth for the middle class.

I'm a cowgirl not cowboy... You were smart to leave. You saw the writing on the wall that a lot don't see. I'm actually conservative and currently looking to cash out and move to Az. I just think it's sad that I'm a Ca native and me and my friends feel like we're being pushed out of here but it is what it is. What state did you relocate to? Are you and your employees happy there for the most part??

Rich, POOR and pensioners. They poor are paid for by the other two groups. Most of the middle class will go.

My wife and I left CA for TN in 2009 and two employees from CA are also here and love it. I still have several businesses in CA, but the number of employees is down even though sales are up. The bulk of the work is now being done in other States that are far more business and tax friendly.

Just leaving CA was like getting a raise for the employees as Tn has no income tax and property tax is 1/4 the % of CA and verynice homes far less expensive. Then when it comes to traffic, we say a traffic jam is two people driving past each other and stopping to talk. Oh, that and allowing deer, squirrels, peacocks and other animals to cross the road. Really hard to cope with compared to the free flowing streets in CA.

I and my wife were born and raised in CA and right now I am hoping a medical condition may not force me back. So far looks OK, but doctor's appointment on Thursday.

I hope you are well Expat. If you come back, welcome. Just don't be surprised at the housing prices if you do, we're partying like it's 2007.

Well I didn't predict anything, but the business environment had become so costly, it sort of forced my hand. It was like this, stay and continue paying the cost of doing business in CA, or leave and instantly increase my profit margin by 20%. It was a no-brainer for me, and that was in 2009.

As for the employees, 40 did the move with us, and about 35 said they couldn't do it for various reasons (family, ties to state, etc). So about half the company is made up of people from California who moved, and half from the current state. For the most part, I've heard only good things about the move from those who lived in California originally. Lower cost of living (housing, food, gas) and they're making more money now than they were in California. A lot of them bought homes in the new state, but didn't own a home in CA.

They won't, don't worry. They'll just continue to vote your money into their pocket incrementally, they're already suckling a lot of it off of you right now. Then when you finally get tired of getting taxed to death, and with the rampant growing crime in your neighborhood, you can think back to this post and repent for your sins.

In and Out could draw me back. The poor will always be there, so no problem with someone to clean your house. Usually College students work the fast food and are servers at restaurants, but CA is a bit different than other States. Fortunately my language skills are quite good as I do business worldwide so I can order with no difficulty.

No one actually dies from taxes, that's just a figure of speech. Do parasites ever have the goal of killing their hosts? Of course not. But they can suckle them dry until they wish they were dead.

You're simply a survival earner for about 3 welfare recipients (that was the ratio last time I did the numbers, might be less now). Enjoy.
