I agree your Oregon locations would be quite a distance for a days travel. The border crossing would increase your time, not so much in the winter.

Sequim to Van. would be driving down the west side of the sound to Olympia and driving back up north again. Or, you could take the ferry over to Whidbey island drive up through Anacortes, or the ferry over north of Seattle. The ferries schedules are cut back in the winter, so you would need to look at that. Check the Washington State Ferry website to get a feel for that.

You are going to get rained on in Washington and Oregon. The Oregon Coast has sun once in awhile in the winter on a random basis, just odd times. No pattern and rare. The banana belt of Sequim, is kind of a joke. There is less but sometimes that's a softer rain. Northern Washington has wind tunnels here and there too. You have lived in Manitoba, so you can do this, but it's never going to be Arizona. (Much prettier than Arizona in my opinion though.) The southern Oregon coast will give you the best weather, especially Brookings. Way too far for one day, but that's my best guess for weather.

There are many courses in Northern Washington. As far as cheap places to stay, not sure about that. There are some trailers on Camano Island, not a ferry island. Maybe small towns east of I-5. Outside of Olympia, maybe eastern Skagit County, east of Bellingham.

Hope it helps. Best of luck to you in your retirement.

Very nice posts, thank you all. We live in Chilliwack, just north of the border near Bellingham and have travelled in and around Seattle quite a bit. Your reports are what we have found, more or less. We like Sequim in some ways. Also realize that Portland is a full day of driving and all the stuff about Seattle traffic and the ferries.

Kind of interested in Redmond/Bend area in Or. Less rain, seems like.
