Pre-2000, the local Hispanic population seemed to primarily be the folks who owned about a dozen Mexican restaurants and Air Force folks who joined the service to get the heck out of Los Angeles or Brownsville-McAllen. The newcomers definitely bring something different to the local mix.

Since Oyster Catcher said they're not moving here..I won't belabor my answer... Destin can be very crowded during the peak season. But, it is very magical and glittery if that appeals to you.. We chose to live reasonably close to Destin but get a lot of house for our money. New home, 3 br, 3ba corner lot $60K... Crestview meets none of your priorities but we are 40 minutes from Destin and have a ton of play money now. We looked at Niceville and Val'p but it cost $100k for a shack of a house... We go to Destin a lot. I am not recommending Crestview but it works for our priorities...

All the people I've met from Florida have been wonderfully friendly and gentle people. So different to the brash new yorkers!!!

You will sleep soundly in Freeport because there really isn't much there to disturb you. Very small town, and you'll probably find yourself driving across the bay for a lot of things.

beachmouse has Freeport pegged. It's getting a lot more housing of late, but still not much to do. You really need to decide if you want to handle the Hwy 331 traffic mess for 2 more years while they finish the four lane and the second bridge.

We are looking to move to the Panhandle of Florida within the next year. Where would be affordable to live on a retirement's income? We are looking for good medical and not too far to the beach. We get along with all ages, we are in our 60's, We will not have a mortgage so that will help.

Honestly, you’d be better off looking just to the west in Baldwin County, Alabama. In AL, people over 65 are exempt from paying the state portion of property taxes.

There is no grocery tax in FL, but I just drive to Pensacola a couple of times per month and load up on groceries while there. The best of both worlds.
