Hi,

I'm new to Houston TX (from S. Cali) and want to plan a family road trip with wife, 5 old month baby and maybe doggy. Any suggestions on which city/beach within a 8 hours driving distance.

I hear Destin, Panama and Pensacola are good choices. I'm looking for nice beaches but also with outdoor restaurants/downtown areas and great seafood, thx.

I think Pensacola Beach would be perfect for you, minus the dog. Most beach areas in Florida are not dog friendly. Destin is nice but so congested. Pensacola Beach is more laid back but still has lots of restaurants, activities, etc.

Pensacola has a nice little downtown area with shops, restaurants, etc.

Panama City is not my favorite and a longer drive. East of Destin (Grayton Beach, Rosemary, etc.) is very nice but Destin itself is just too busy for me, especially with a baby in tow.

Pensacola Beach is a good fit, I agree as it has the beach but also a nice downtown area that feels somewhat historic.

What's the difference? I'm looking for a nice beach with some stuff to do night like a boardwalk or some kind of outdoor mall with restaurants.

The biggest difference is the size of the crowds, which are much worse in Destin. With a baby you honestly would be better off on P. Beach, IMO.

I agree with AustinTraveler said. Pensacola Beach does have 2 designated areas where people can bring their dog to the beach but I would suggest that you find a friend or hire someone to pet sit your pup while you're on vacation. If you do come to Pensacola Beach make sure you try Peg Leg Pete's. Food is really good and the place is very casual and friendly.

Default Pensacola Beach

You will love it. The beaches are on the same coast from Pensacola to Destin to Panama City. The illusion that Destin or Panama City Beaches look nicer is created because the water stays shallower for a longer distance out from the beach in Destin and Panama City than in Pensacola. The shallower water is of course more translucent and therefore creates the bright blue/green color effect over a larger area. In Pensacola the water is just as clear and the sand just as white as in Destin and Panama City. We drive there all the time from Houston and love it. Pensacola is the closest Florida Beach from Houston.
