Oo that smell, can't you smell that smell? (Phoenix: live, manufacturing)

Anyone else smell the cigarette smoke smell from downtown to tempe town lake driving on the freeway? This morning was day 2 of it. I did see people on the res burning crap, but doubt it would go that far and wide.

I can't imagine that many people smoking cigarettes at the same time. It seems like it would dissipate a little bit more. That would be a ton of smokers...I am sensitive to it with asthma so next time I drive that way I'll pay attention.

that would be a lot of people smoking if it was like that.

I know the manufacturing on the I-10 & I-17 area gets started up in the early morning, but this is a new smell and is spread all over.

I didnt smell cigarettes, but I did smell something a little sweeter yesterday morning about 10:00 along 101 between i17 and thunderbird.. I think I was just a few cars behind though and didnt see em, maybe you were too?

alright. i figured it out this morning. The fields on the res are being plowed. I could see the giant clouds coming from their fields. I have no idea why it smells like cigs though.

Memory association? When I was a kid in the 60s gas stations were littered with cig buts. To this day I associate the smell of certain hydrocarbons, iso-octane in particular, with cigarettes.

I have noticed a distinct odor in the air on rainy days (before it rains). Not the typical rainy smell when a storm first starts, this is a thicker scent. I first noticed it on July 4, and it was pervasive throughout the area where I live (Anthem). I asked some neighbors about it and they said they didn't notice. I've since noticed it when I've been outside watching the monsoon storms roll in. Is that the dust I'm smelling? It's hard to describe, it almost, but not quite, smells like something's burning. On the 4th I thought maybe it was from a wildfire. Is it the infamous LA smog? Any ideas?

Usually, it's the smell of the dust, often mixed with the smell of rain. No, you are not smelling LA smog. Depending on the direction things were coming from, that "burning" smell may have been from the storms passing over and stirring up the recently burned areas around Crown King. Otherwise, it's just wind/dust smell.

It's actually the smell of the Creosote bush. It just happens to emit a strong scent when it is humid or raining. It's hard to believe that everyone doesn't smell this scent when it rains. I smell it strongly wherever I am in the Valley, even in the middle of Phoenix.
