Meruelo gets $1 billion and five years to build an arena for an expansion team (he would have to pay the $1 billion back) It's crazy. He ran the franchise into the ground.

I'm not a hockey fan so I'm not watching either way.
Why would the NHL bring a team back to a market where it left? It left for a reason(s), right? Especially, as it was pointed out above, the Phoenix area was not favorable for a hockey franchise and there was a lack of compassion towards the team. They had to play at an NCAA hockey rink that held 5,000 fans... that is a true slap in the face. The same situation the San Diego Chargers went through when they played at an MLS stadium for a season...

The issue is the current owner. If they had a competent owner, the team would have just played in Glendale until a better arena was built. They'll bring it back because it's a top 10 media market in the country and has quite possibly produced the best American hockey player of all time. A bad, broken down mess helped inspire Auston Matthews. Plus, with the arena and owner instability, how can you possibly say the market won't take to the team because they've had nothing to take to? Once the Panthers found stability, the arena in a not so great location is 90% full every night because the team is worth something

I don't know and don't care, but the NHL seems to want a team here.

How is Phoenix not favorable for a hockey franchise? Remember that the Phoenix area is made up largely of transplants ... many of whom are from other parts of the country where ice hockey is the dominant sport. The problem is the team itself, the location of the venue, and the financial boondoggle (even declaring bankruptcy at one time). Lots of hockey fans want to see NHL thrive here, but they want a team that can actually perform, make it to the playoffs regularly, and even win a Stanley or two.

Shuffling the team around from downtown Phoenix to Glendale to Tempe, and then to other proposed sites that are often in far flung areas only made matters worse. The Coyotes had some of the best attendance records when they were based downtown at what was then called America West Arena. Since then, it's been very hit & miss. They should have stayed downtown in the first place, but could have easily returned there if we had a Mayor who was less "woke" and more geared toward actually making Phoenix a thriving sports/entertainment destination like it should be.

The various cities in the valley seem to want to wash their hand of the whole Coyote experience. Maybe the Ajo Coyotes?

I think many cities, especially ones who do not have a long, historical association with a team, are fed up with the sports stadium scams the billionaire owners push. They promise benefits from urban renewal to increased revenue while taking public money to build the stadium, the parking, and infrastructure. Land that might have a better use is paved over and vacant most of the time.

The promised benefits never accrue and ten years later the team management is extorting more money for renovations with the threat of leaving. That might work if the team is a winner and has community support, but with a perennial loser like the Coyotes they get shown the door.

I haven't run into anyone that is upset that the Coyotes are (potentially) leaving. I know they have fans but at the end of the day, most people, at least in my sphere, don't really care.

It happens more than you think. Winnipeg lost their team when they moved to Arizona. They now have a new team there. Same with Minnesota. The North Stars moved to Dallas in 93, and then the Minnesota Wild were created in 2000.

Phoenix will have a team again. The right pieces just need to fall into place.
