Hi I have 2 dogs that need training, I spent a pile of money at a company that did board and train in Prescott but after a few months the training wore off and i am back to square 1. I do not want to make the same mistake again. There are a lot of trainers that promise the moon. Anyone have any success stories?

Your trainer should have trained YOU. The training "wore off" because you didn't implement his training approach.

In a personal example, I got my dog trained (yep, it's spendy). Now, my discipline has "worn off". My wife reminded me last night that I repeated: "sit......, sit, sit,..... sit". Finally, she sits. I was reminded that the trainers told me to say sit ONCE, followed by a firm "NO". So yeah, after 6 months, some of it wore off... because of me. Walking to far ahead, say "heel" ONCE followed by a firm "NO". And when she complies, in a higher pitch positive voice, say "good girl". Your commands might be slightly different.

Go back to the exact same successful trainer and get a touch-up (it will be fast), then make sure you take copious notes and use his techniques with your follow-through. I suspect we have the same problem.

Our trainer was on the East Valley. He did a GREAT job. It sounds like yours did too. The fading problem is with US, that transfers to the dog.

You need training where you're involved. We did petco training and it worked perfectly. We started at 3 months old so never learned the bad habits. Plus consistency is the key and ultimately it's up to you for them to succeed.

My trainer spent little time training us and does not want to come to the east valley from Prescott to teach us. I was hoping to get referrals of local trainers who do a good job.

From Prescott, I don't blame your trainer for not wanting to come to you. Solution: you go to the trainer. Ask if they are okay with you watching them work with your dog for several hours on the last day. Why wouldn't they??? Then, you take copious notes.

If it was ME, I would not want my dog to be trained in a different way. In short, you (WE) need the training. I am describing what my plan will be. I'm waiting for us to take an extended trip. That way, he can do double duty (touch-up training plus watching her). And then, I too need the touch-up training.

In fairness to our dog, my wife worked with the trainer for several hours at the end. I was tied up and she trained me. Her data dump to me was about 10 minutes. Obviously, I was the problem. Not the dog, my wife, or the trainer.

Do as you please. But if my dog was well trained once, by definition, I hired the right person. There would be no chance I would change trainers unless I had to. YMMV. .

Since no one seems to be suggesting much, I'll offer this. Keep in mind this isn't a recommendation, because I don't even own a dog. However, when I was doing some research for a hard-of-hearing friend who was needing to train a "hearing ear" dog, I talked to a company called Diamond Dogs (602-899-DOGZ) which made a good impression. You could call and ask if there's anyplace they'd recommend.
