After all these years, we finally went to the Pollack movie theater in Tempe, and it was so great that I wanted to mention it here.

You may know about its low admission price: $3.50. So I thought it might be scruffy or shabby. No! It's a pleasant, tidy place, well-staffed, with bathrooms as pristine as the exorbitant Harkins Camelview.

They have a nice combination of current major second-run movies and older pop-classics (Blazing Saddles, Disney's Snow White, Animal House, James Bond). It has quirky times, just Thursday-Sunday. (They presumably save money by not staffing on days that would have few customers.) And it has quirky decor. The main hall is full of full-size movie figures like Batman, photos, and vintage poster-cards. The lobby is full of video games; I imagine it's a good place for a boy's birthday party. Because it's off the beaten track, I get the feeling that the theaters are rarely full, which means that you're less likely to be sitting next to an annoying stranger whispering or texting.

At those prices, where two tickets would be $7 versus almost $30 at the Camelview, it's definitely cost-effective, making up for the gas of a longer drive. And it's nice just to support any company trying to keep prices down.

I agree, and if you want a good meal before or after, I like Yupha's next door for Thai food.

I used to live only a few miles from there and would go all the time. Somewhat of a hidden gem in the metro area for sure. They also do a really great job of decorating that shopping center for the holidays.

I've lived walking distance from there for many decades. I haven't gone as often as I should, but it is everything the OP said. Plus, they've always had really good popcorn. Still really good the next day. Hope that is still true.

And yes to Yuphas next door as well. And Vincitorios if Italian is your preference, just steps away

Right, I've heard of them. They seem to have a good reputation.

I also lived close enough to that theater to walk there, about 15 years ago. I recall the tickets being $2 at the time. Tuesday was discount day, cheaper tickets and I believe some of the snacks were also discounted. People who didn't have a lot could take their family out to a movie night for $10-$15.
