Pictures taken from the plane window on a flight from San Francisco to Houston. Also showing salt pans in southern San Francisco Bay and the ghost town of Drawbridge ( the brown area where the line cross ) just few miles of San Jose.
The spectacular colours come from the algae in the water. To make salt you have to gradually evaporate a pool of water and it gradually gets more and more saline until crystals form. As the water gets more and more salty, different algae bloom and you get different colours.
