Rome must have some exciting modern architecture on its outskirts, just like Paris, and it would be a treat to see some of that, for a change. Anyone seen any of it there, or does it even exist?

It's probably there, if you know where to look. In Florence, they often integrated modern design into existing buildings, and I would assume it's the same in Rome.

Yep. The E.U.R. is a modernist business district commissioned under Mussolini, though parts were finished post-war using fascist-era styles. Here's one of the best representative of the fascist style:
