OK, take a breath. You can, if you wish, insist that the published polls are the results of a concerted effort to push a false narrative. It doesn't make much sense to me, frankly, but I will happily admit that it's internally consistent.
However: The GOP has broken ties with Trump. That is a
major deal. That's not a decision taken lightly. The only rational reason to do that is to cut losses. And that means that the GOP has convincing evidence that Trump is a liability. Their own polling (they do that), knowledge of some
serious dirt - it almost doesn't matter. The GOP leadership is many things, but not stupid. There's no logical reason for them to take the loss involved in parting ways, unless they're firmly convinced staying with Trump is the worse option. He wouldn't even have to win - just not lose badly enough to drag down the downticket votes.
This is pure damage control - containing the worst possible outcome for the GOP. And there's no logically consistent reason they would do that to their downticket votes.
